The mysterious beauty and surface quality of encaustic paintings have kept me intrigued with the medium since 2004. The process of painting with beeswax paints, which are melted and fused with heat, offers me incredible versatility, a gorgeous color palette, and tends to be more forgiving than working other paint media. I enjoy creating a sense of calm and spaciousness over the initial layers which tend to be busier and more spontaneous.
Most of my oil paintings, too, have a wax medium added to thicken the oil paint. This allows me to build layers and delight in the process of scraping back, adding and subtracting, until the painting feels complete. Many of my abstract paintings, whether encaustic or oil, suggest land and water masses, however you are always welcome to come up with your own interpretation.
